FAQs

Spent catalyst recycling: what plants and traders ask before selling

What types of spent catalyst do you buy?

We buy spent and surplus catalysts containing tungsten, molybdenum, copper, nickel, cobalt, vanadium and precious metals. That includes hydroprocessing catalysts (CoMo, NiMo, NiW), vanadium pentoxide, nickel and copper catalysts, and palladium or platinum catalysts. Unused surplus catalyst and off-spec batches are also welcome.

Is spent catalyst a waste cost or something we can sell?

In many cases it can be sold. Spent catalyst often contains enough recoverable metal that it has value instead of a disposal fee, especially catalysts with molybdenum, vanadium, nickel, cobalt or precious metals. Whether a lot has positive value depends on its metal content, carbon and sulphur levels, and logistics. Send us the analysis and we’ll tell you.

How is spent catalyst priced?

Pricing is based on payable metal content from a lab assay, minus the cost of processing carbon, sulphur, oil and moisture, plus the market price of the contained metals on the day. Larger, consistent lots from a single change-out are easier to sample and usually price better than mixed batches.

What do you need to know about handling and shipping?

Tell us the catalyst type, whether it’s oxidic or pre-sulphided, how it’s packed (supersacks, drums or bins) and where it’s located. Some spent catalysts are self-heating or classed as hazardous for transport. We arrange compliant packaging, documentation, export and customs, and can advise before anything is loaded.

Why sell spent catalyst to Oryx Metals rather than a disposal contractor?

A disposal contractor charges you to take catalyst away. Oryx Metals buys it, because we place it with the specialist refiners worldwide that recover its metals. We’ve handled catalyst lots from a few drums up to projects such as a 100-ton spent copper catalyst recovery in Colorado. You get a written offer, payment by wire and the logistics handled from your site to the refinery.

What do you need to give us an offer on our catalyst?

The catalyst type and supplier name if known, a recent analysis or spec sheet, approximate tonnage, packaging, and where it’s stored. Send it through our pricing form or message us on WhatsApp or WeChat. A metals specialist replies within [X] hours with an indicative price or the questions we need answered.
