Tantalum scrap is one of the most valuable minor metal streams
Tantalum resists almost every acid and holds a charge in a very small volume, so it is used in electronic capacitors, chemical process equipment, sputtering targets for chips and superalloys for jet engines. Capacitor production, electronics recycling, equipment decommissioning and machining all generate tantalum scrap, and because tantalum is a conflict-sensitive mineral, recycled tantalum is in steady demand from refiners and their customers.

FAQs
Tantalum scrap price and recycling questions answered
What tantalum scrap do you buy?
Tantalum capacitors (loose, rejected or unused), sintered anodes and pellets, tantalum sheet, plate, rod, tube and wire, spent sputtering targets, turnings, powder, and tantalum-lined chemical equipment. We also look at tantalum-bearing alloys and residues.
Do you buy tantalum capacitors still on circuit boards?
Loose capacitors are easiest to price. Boards with a high share of tantalum capacitors can also work, but the tantalum has to be separated first, so they are valued differently. Send photos of the boards and an estimate of the capacitor count and we will tell you the options for tantalum capacitor recycling.
What sets the tantalum scrap price?
The tantalum content and the form. Clean sheet, rod and targets are worth the most, followed by capacitor anodes, then loose capacitors with their casings and lead frames, then oxidised powders and residues. The tantalum market sets the base. Oryx gives a written offer on your analysis, not a published price.
How do I check whether my material is tantalum or niobium?
They look alike and are often found together. Tantalum is roughly twice as dense as niobium, so a heavy, grey, non-magnetic metal is more likely tantalum. An XRF reading is the reliable test. Send the readout and photos and we will confirm before making an offer.
Do you ask for documents when buying tantalum scrap?
Yes. Tantalum is covered by conflict minerals rules, so we ask where the material came from and how it was generated. For most industrial and electronics scrap that is a simple declaration, and it keeps the material acceptable to refiners downstream.
Why do sellers choose Oryx Metals as their tantalum scrap buyer?
Tantalum is a core metal for Oryx Metals. We work directly with tantalum refiners, separate capacitor scrap from mill products so each is paid on its own value, and take care of the documentation refiners require. Sellers get a written offer, agreed sampling and payment by wire.
