Hafnium is scarce, so every kilogram of scrap counts
Hafnium is a by-product of refining nuclear-grade zirconium, so supply is limited and cannot easily grow with demand. It is used in nickel superalloys for jet engines, in control rods, in semiconductor high-k layers and in plasma cutting electrodes. Machining and production leave turnings, crystal bar ends, spent targets and alloy revert, and hafnium recycling returns that material to refiners rather than to landfill or mixed scrap.

FAQs
Hafnium recycling: answers for scrap and revert sellers
What hafnium scrap is accepted for hafnium recycling?
Crystal bar and bar ends, sheet, plate and rod, machining turnings, spent hafnium sputtering targets, used plasma cutting electrodes with hafnium inserts, hafnium-bearing superalloy revert, and hafnium-zirconium residues. If you are not sure what you have, send a photo and the analysis.
Are used plasma cutting electrodes worth recycling?
In volume, yes. Each electrode holds only a small hafnium insert in a copper body, so value comes from collecting them in quantity. Fabrication shops and distributors that gather electrodes by the drum can sell them to us, and the copper content is considered too.
How is hafnium scrap valued?
By hafnium content, the form, the zirconium level and contamination such as oil or other metals. Solid, clean hafnium is worth far more per kilogram than mixed turnings or electrodes. Oryx bases every offer on analysis and the current hafnium market, not a list price.
Are hafnium turnings safe to ship?
Fine hafnium turnings and powders can be flammable, so they need to be packed dry or under oil in sealed steel drums, labelled correctly and shipped under the right dangerous goods classification. We explain packing requirements before collection.
How do I start selling hafnium scrap to Oryx?
Send a description, weight estimate, photos and analysis by email, WhatsApp or WeChat. We reply with questions or a written offer. Once accepted, we agree packing and transport, check weight and grade on arrival, and pay by wire.
Why choose Oryx Metals for hafnium scrap?
Hafnium buyers are few, and many scrap companies have never handled it. Oryx Metals specialises in rare and minor metals, knows which refiners can take each form of hafnium, and prices your scrap on its content. That means fewer rejected lots and a clear offer even for mixed or low-grade material.
