Slag recycling recovers tin, solder and minor metals

Every melting process separates a layer of slag or dross from the metal. Wave soldering lines skim solder dross, tin smelters produce tin slag that can carry tantalum and niobium, and alloy producers generate slags with nickel, cobalt or refractory metals. These slags and drosses often hold enough metal to be refined again instead of being dumped.

FORMS WE BUY

Slags and drosses we buy

Irregular silver-gray solder dross with shiny solidified metal, oxidized crusts and rough metallic fragments collected in an industrial tray near soldering equipment.

Solder dross

Lead-free and tin-lead dross from wave soldering

Silvery tin dross with reflective metallic flakes, rough oxidized chunks and granular residues collected in a steel bin beside industrial tin melting equipment.

Tin dross

Dross from tin melting and tinning lines

Dark tin smelting slag with jagged, glassy surfaces, metallic highlights and porous fragments collected in a large industrial steel bin.

Tin slag

Smelter tin slag with Ta and Nb

Dark alloy slag chunks with fractured metallic surfaces, oxidized patches and irregular fragments stored in a heavy steel container at a recycling facility.

Alloy slags

Slags with nickel, cobalt or refractory metals

Dark refining slag with glossy black surfaces, porous textures and gold-colored metallic inclusions collected in a refractory dish near melting crucibles.

Precious metal slags

Refining and melting slags with Au, Ag or PGMs

Mixed furnace skimmings, solidified metallic spills, gray slag chunks and dusty refractory residues collected in a heavy steel bin beside a foundry furnace.

Skims and furnace residues

HOW minor metals are PRICED

Oryx Metals makes scrap recycling easy and profitable

There's no single scrap price for minor metals. The same metal can come as clean solids or contaminated powder, and its value per kg can differ many times over. Every Oryx offer is based on your material's analysis, form and the market on the day.

How our pricing works
Highest value

Clean, high-purity solids

Uncontaminated pieces, offcuts, ingots and production rejects

Mid-Range

Coated or alloyed scrap

Coated parts, alloys, turnings and mixed solids

Priced on content

Powders, sludges & residues

Value depends on metal %, contamination and moisture

FAQs

Slag recycling and solder dross recycling FAQ

What slags and drosses do you buy for slag recycling?

Lead-free and tin-lead solder dross, tin dross, tin smelter slags carrying tantalum and niobium, alloy slags containing nickel, cobalt or refractory metals, precious metal refining and melting slags, and skims and furnace residues.

Is solder dross worth more than I think?

Often, yes. Solder dross is mostly metal trapped in oxide, and lead-free dross can also contain silver. Send the alloy type and an estimate of weight, and keep dross dry and separate from other waste.

How is tin slag priced for its tantalum?

Tin slags are valued on their tantalum and niobium oxide content, plus any remaining tin, less processing costs and penalties for radioactivity or other impurities. Only slags above a certain grade are economic. Oryx bases each offer on analysis.

Can lead-bearing dross be shipped internationally?

Yes, with the right waste classification and permits. Tin-lead dross is often classed as hazardous, so it needs proper packing and documents. We confirm requirements for your route.

Do electronics assembly plants sell dross to Oryx regularly?

Yes. Many EMS and assembly plants generate dross every week. We agree a pricing formula linked to the tin market and collect on a regular schedule. Solid solder scrap is covered on our Tin Recycling page.

Why sell slag and dross to Oryx Metals?

Slag and dross are often sold as low-grade waste. Oryx Metals values them for their tin, silver, tantalum, niobium and other metals, matches them to refiners that recover those metals and gives you a clear written offer.
