Don't Let Your Germanium Go to Waste: Recycle It Responsibly with Oryx Metals

Germanium, prized for its high refractive index, is a crucial component in cutting-edge technologies like infrared systems, lenses, windows, and powerful semiconductors. However, many forms of Germanium scrap are challenging to recycle, leading to improper disposal and missed opportunities.

HOW minor metals are PRICED

Oryx Metals makes scrap recycling easy and profitable

There's no single scrap price for minor metals. The same metal can come as clean solids or contaminated powder, and its value per kg can differ many times over. Every Oryx offer is based on your material's analysis, form and the market on the day.

How our pricing works
Highest value

Clean, high-purity solids

Uncontaminated pieces, offcuts, ingots and production rejects

Mid-Range

Coated or alloyed scrap

Coated parts, alloys, turnings and mixed solids

Priced on content

Powders, sludges & residues

Value depends on metal %, contamination and moisture

FAQs

Germanium recycling: what sellers ask before they send material

What types of germanium scrap do you buy for germanium recycling?

We buy germanium in almost any form: infrared lenses and windows (coated or uncoated, whole or broken), optical blanks, ingots and crystal ends, solar and semiconductor wafers, fiber optic scrap, grinding powder and kerf, germanium oxide, and polishing sludges or other germanium-bearing residues. If your material contains germanium, send us the analysis.

How can I tell if my material is really germanium?

The quickest way is an XRF analyzer reading. Germanium optics are dark grey, mirror-like and heavy for their size, but some materials look almost identical and contain much less germanium, especially chalcogenide glass (Ge-As-Se) used in cheaper infrared optics. Send us a photo and the readout, and we’ll confirm what you have before you quote a price to anyone.

What is germanium scrap worth per kg?

It depends on the form, the germanium content, any contamination such as arsenic or copper, and the market price on the day. Clean, uncoated lenses and blanks are worth many times more per kilogram than contaminated powder or sludge. That’s why every Oryx offer is based on your material’s analysis, not a fixed price list.

Do you buy coated, broken or rejected germanium lenses?

Yes. Coated optics, chipped or broken lenses, rejected production parts and mixed lots of lenses and windows are all common in germanium recycling. Coatings and damage affect the price, not whether we buy it.

Can you buy germanium scrap from outside the US?

Yes. Oryx buys germanium from sellers in the Americas, Europe and Asia, through entities in the USA, UAE and Hong Kong. We handle import, export and customs clearance and can advise on the documents needed for your country before anything ships.

Why sell germanium scrap to Oryx Metals?

Germanium is one of the minor metals Oryx Metals has specialised in for over 20 years. We work directly with the few refiners worldwide that can process germanium optics, powders and residues, so we can price your material on its real germanium content, including low-grade and contaminated lots that general scrap buyers turn down. You get a written offer, payment by wire and the logistics handled from your site to the refinery.
