Copper catalyst recycling for chemical and gas plants

Copper catalysts are used across the chemical industry: copper-zinc oxide for methanol synthesis and the low-temperature shift in hydrogen and ammonia plants, copper chromite for hydrogenation of fats and esters, and supported copper for other reactions. They are replaced on a regular cycle, and the spent catalyst still holds a high share of copper and, in some cases, chromium and zinc. Oryx has already handled spent copper catalyst, including a project for a plant in Colorado.

HOW minor metals are PRICED

Oryx Metals makes scrap recycling easy and profitable

There's no single scrap price for minor metals. The same metal can come as clean solids or contaminated powder, and its value per kg can differ many times over. Every Oryx offer is based on your material's analysis, form and the market on the day.

How our pricing works
Highest value

Clean, high-purity solids

Uncontaminated pieces, offcuts, ingots and production rejects

Mid-Range

Coated or alloyed scrap

Coated parts, alloys, turnings and mixed solids

Priced on content

Powders, sludges & residues

Value depends on metal %, contamination and moisture

FAQs

Copper catalyst recycling: questions from chemical plants

Which copper catalysts can go to copper catalyst recycling?

Copper chromite hydrogenation catalyst, copper-zinc-alumina methanol synthesis catalyst, low-temperature shift catalyst, copper on alumina and other supported copper catalysts and adsorbents, unused stock, and catalyst fines.

Is copper chromite catalyst harder to recycle?

It needs more care, because it contains chromium and may be classed as hazardous waste. It also has a high copper content, so it remains recyclable. We check classification and route it to processors licensed to handle it.

How is spent copper catalyst priced?

On copper content, plus any payable zinc, minus treatment costs for chromium, carbon, oil and moisture, against the copper market. Larger lots with consistent analysis earn better terms. Oryx makes each offer from your assay.

Do you buy reduced or pyrophoric copper catalyst?

Yes, if it is passivated or packed under inert gas. Reduced copper catalyst can heat up quickly in air, so packing must be agreed before loading.

What do you need from us to make an offer?

The catalyst type or trade name, an analysis if available, the safety data sheet, the tonnage and the packaging. A plant engineer or a trading company acting for the plant can send this, and we reply with a written offer.

Why work with Oryx Metals on copper catalyst?

Oryx Metals treats copper catalyst as a metal-bearing material, not waste. We match it to processors that recover copper and, where possible, zinc and chromium, handle classification and permits, and pay on content, as we did for a copper catalyst project in Colorado.
