Rhenium scrap: small amounts, serious value
Rhenium is among the rarest metals in the earth’s crust and is recovered mainly as a by-product of copper and molybdenum mining. Most of it goes into single-crystal nickel superalloys for jet engine turbine blades, with the rest used in platinum-rhenium catalysts, tungsten-rhenium and molybdenum-rhenium wire, and thermocouples. Because rhenium is so scarce, even a few percent in a turbine blade or wire makes rhenium recycling worthwhile.

FAQs
Rhenium recycling FAQ for superalloy and wire scrap
What rhenium scrap does Oryx buy?
Rhenium-bearing superalloy turbine blades and casting revert, pure rhenium pellets, sheet, rod and powder, molybdenum-rhenium and tungsten-rhenium wire and ribbon, used thermocouples, and rhenium-bearing grindings and residues.
How do I know if my turbine blades contain rhenium?
Second and third generation single-crystal alloys such as CMSX-4, PWA 1484 and René N5 contain a few percent rhenium, while older equiaxed blades usually contain none. The part number or an XRF reading usually answers the question. Send us photos and part numbers and we will check.
What is rhenium scrap worth?
It depends heavily on rhenium content. Pure rhenium and high-rhenium wire are valued mostly on the rhenium itself, while superalloy blades are valued on rhenium together with nickel, cobalt, tantalum and other elements. Oryx quotes each lot on its analysis and the market on the day.
Do you buy mixed lots where rhenium is only one of the metals?
Yes. Most rhenium arrives in superalloy scrap mixed with other grades. We sort and assay lots so the rhenium-bearing material is paid for its rhenium content instead of being averaged with lower grades.
Can you buy rhenium scrap from MROs and engine shops outside the US?
Yes. We work with MROs, engine shops and traders in the Americas, Europe, the Middle East and Asia. We can provide certificates of destruction for aerospace parts where required and handle export documentation.
What is the Oryx approach to rhenium scrap?
Rhenium is easy to lose in a mixed superalloy sale. Oryx Metals separates and grades rhenium-bearing material, works directly with refiners that recover rhenium, and makes sure your offer reflects the rhenium you actually have. You get a written offer, an agreed assay process and payment by wire.
