FAQs

Minor metals recycling: what sellers ask before they send material

What counts as a minor metal in minor metals recycling?

Minor metals are produced in small volumes, usually as byproducts of mining base metals like copper, zinc and aluminium. The ones Oryx buys most often are germanium, gallium, indium, hafnium, rhenium, tantalum and niobium. They're critical to semiconductors, infrared optics, aerospace alloys and electronics, and only a handful of plants in the world can refine them. That's why most scrap buyers won't take them, and why specialist minor metals recycling exists.

My XRF readout shows a metal I don't recognise. Can you tell me what it is and whether it's worth anything?

Yes, and it's one of the most common ways sellers reach us. Send a photo of the material and a screenshot of the analyzer readout. A metals specialist will tell you what it is, whether we buy it and what we need to price it. Material that turns up in government surplus or military contract lots is often worth far more than it looks.

How is minor metal scrap priced?

Every lot is priced on its own analysis, not from a price list. The main factors are the metal content, the form (solids, turnings, powders, sludges), contamination and moisture, the market price on the day, and where the material is located. Clean germanium optics and contaminated germanium powder can differ in value per kilogram many times over, which is why we ask for an analysis first.

Do you buy contaminated, mixed or low-grade minor metal material?

Yes. Residues, sludges, filter cakes, dusts, grindings and mixed byproducts containing minor metals are a core part of what we buy. Contamination affects the price, not whether we're interested. If your material contains germanium, gallium, indium, tantalum or another minor metal, send us the analysis even if you think it's too low-grade.

We're a manufacturer clearing production scrap through a trading company. What documentation do you provide?

You'll receive a formal written offer covering price, assay basis and delivery terms, followed by a purchase contract from the Oryx entity best placed for your region (USA, UAE or Hong Kong). We handle import, export and customs clearance, and payment is made by wire on the agreed terms.

Why sell minor metals to Oryx Metals instead of a general scrap buyer?

Oryx Metals has focused on minor metals and high temperature alloys for over 20 years. We leave steel, copper and aluminium to everyone else. Because some of these materials can only be processed by one or two plants in the world, we've built direct relationships with those processors across the US, Europe and Asia. That lets us price complex or contaminated minor metal scrap on what's actually in it, and handle the logistics from your yard or warehouse to the refinery.
