High speed steel scrap carries tungsten, molybdenum and cobalt
High speed steel is the tool steel behind drills, taps, saw blades, end mills, broaches and hobs. Grades such as M2, M42 and T1 contain tungsten, molybdenum, vanadium and often cobalt, which makes HSS scrap worth far more than ordinary steel. Kept separate from carbon steel and carbide, it goes back to tool steel melters as a direct alloy input.

FAQs
High speed steel scrap: questions about HSS recycling and price
What high speed steel scrap do you buy?
HSS drills, taps, reamers, end mills, cutters, broaches, hobs and saw blades, tool steel bar ends and blanks, and clean HSS turnings and grindings. Grades such as M2, M35, M42, T1 and T15 are all welcome.
How do I tell HSS from carbon steel or carbide?
Many HSS tools are marked HSS, HSS-E or HSS-Co on the shank. HSS is strongly magnetic like steel but heavier, and gives a short, dull red spark when ground, while carbon steel sparks bright and bushy. Carbide is far heavier and only weakly magnetic. Keep the three apart for the best price.
What affects the HSS scrap price?
The grade and its tungsten, molybdenum and cobalt content, how well the lot is sorted, and contamination such as carbon steel, carbide or oil. Cobalt grades like M42 earn more than M2. The high speed steel scrap price follows those alloying metals, so Oryx quotes on your grades and analysis.
Are bimetal saw blades accepted as HSS scrap?
Yes, but they are priced lower than solid HSS because only the teeth are high speed steel and the backing is spring steel. Keep them in a separate bin.
How often can a machine shop sell HSS scrap to Oryx?
As often as it suits you. Some shops send a few drums a year, others ship monthly. We agree a pricing basis, arrange collection and pay by wire after weighing and grading.
Why sell high speed steel scrap to Oryx Metals?
A general yard often buys HSS as heavy steel. Oryx Metals pays for the tungsten, molybdenum and cobalt in your tooling, grades cobalt HSS separately and sends it to tool steel melters, so your scrap is paid as alloy rather than as steel.
