FAQs

Scrap metal gallery: questions about the material we buy

I found material that looks like something in this scrap metal gallery. How do I know what it is?

Start by matching it visually against the photos here, then check it with an XRF analyzer if you have one. Many valuable metals look ordinary: germanium optics look like dark glass, tantalum capacitors like small electronic parts, rhenium-bearing superalloys like any other turbine scrap. A photo and a readout are usually enough for us to tell you exactly what you’re holding.

Is the scrap in these photos actually valuable, or just unusual?

Most of it is far more valuable than it looks. Minor metals and high temperature alloys are produced in small volumes and only a handful of refiners can process them, so a single drum or supersack can be worth more than a truckload of common scrap. Value depends on the metal content, form and contamination, which is why we always price on analysis.

What happens to material like this after Oryx buys it?

We place it with the specialist refiner or processor best suited to that metal and form, often one of only a few plants worldwide that can handle it. Recovered metal goes back into aerospace, electronics, optics and industrial supply chains. This is also why we can buy contaminated, mixed or low-grade material that general scrap buyers turn down.

How do I know Oryx Metals has really bought material like mine?

That’s what this gallery is for. Every photo shows a real purchase, taken by our team or partners and watermarked as Oryx Metals. We’ve specialised in minor metals and high temperature alloys for over 20 years, and we’d rather show you the material we’ve handled than describe it. If your material matches what you see here, you’re talking to a buyer who already knows it.

My material looks dirtier or more mixed than these photos. Will that put you off?

No. Much of what’s in the gallery arrived oily, coated, broken or mixed with other material. Condition and contamination change the price, not whether we buy it. Send it as it is, and tell us honestly what’s in the lot.

What should I send to get a price on material like this?

A clear photo of the material (close-up and the whole lot), an XRF readout or lab analysis if you have one, the approximate quantity and where it’s located. Upload it through our pricing form or message us on WhatsApp or WeChat. A metals specialist replies within 24 hours with a price or the questions we need answered.
